#OTD in 1938, USS Enterprise (CV-6) was commissioned. War Department officials and VIPs attending the ceremony were presented with aluminum model "Big E" ashtrays that had been cast at the Newport News Shipbuilding foundry as souvenirs. The ashtrays are now valued by collectors.
