It's time to take a closer look at the new motors and compare them to their Power Functions counterparts
Let's see the rotation speed without load, I used the LEGO speed computer to measure the motors
The motors were geared up or down to be in a similar RPM range for the comparison
The L motor climbs faster than the M motor as it has more torque at a similar RPM
If we compare the two XL motors you'll see that the higher rpm/lower torque combination moves the light body faster
Now let's see the servos - for Power Functions there was a dedicated servo motor, but we don't have one for Powered Up
The Power Functions servo works properly, turns full 90 degrees in both directions and then returns to the center
In this final test I wanted to see the difference when the current protection shuts down the motors for the two platforms
The Powered Up XL motor's gear ratio is 2:1 to match the Power Functions motor, it has 2 120g weights on it
The PF XL motor still climbs with the 3 weights
LEGO Power Functions IR-receivers V1 and V2
Let's build a test vehicle with selectable IR-receiver, using a power hungry 5292 RC buggy motor...
Now, let's try a few fast back and forth moves.
With V1 receiver, we almost immediately reach thermal shutdown of the receiver, with characteristic "hickup" behaviour
Now with V2 receiver. At first it looks much better...
The modification doesn't improve V1 behaviour...
