WHAT IS CAPE?
When we talk about storms with lightning, hall and possible tornadoes, we talk about CAPE, or Convective Available Potential Energy
It is a measure of the energy available to create a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus cloud
CAPE is related to the instability in the atmosphere and the updraft strength in thunderstorms.
You can think of it as the amount of fuel a parcel of air would have as it rises up through the atmosphere
CAPE is measured in Joules per kilogram of air. Any measure over zero indicates instability and has the potential for a thunderstorm.
Temperature, wind speed and direction, and moisture in the atmosphere are also key ingredients.
