Basic plant collecting and pressing
Collect all the parts necessary for identification and record the plant characteristics
Once dry, transler to a permanent storage box containing a layer of fresh silica gel.
You will need....
Trim the plant specimen to fit the herbarium sheet (42 x 26.5cm)
Remove samples of leaf, flower and fruit to press for the capsule
Place several layers of thick soft card on the press
Write the collector number on the flimsy.
Put fragile flowers and sticky fruits in waxed papui.
Put loose leaves flowers, fruits and seeds in a capsule marked with the collection number.
How to collect plant specimens
Identify your plant
Attach tag with its unique number
Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris)
Place presses in the drier
Log field data and produce labels
Detach plant parts for future analysis
Attach strapping
Digitise the collection (Scanner or Digital Photography)
Share the collection online
