Production media: • A specific type of medium called production medium is used for penicillin manufacture. The production medium contains lactose, CSL, glucose, CaCO3, KH,PO, and vegetable oil. Penicillin precursors may be added depending upon the type of penicillin produced.
Nitrogen source: Corn steep liquor (CSL) provides cheap & readily available nitrogen. Ammonium sulphate, ammonium acetate, ammonium lactate or even ammonia gas can be used as nitrogen source.
Precursors: Corn steep liquor contains phenyl ethyl amine which supplies phenyl acetic acid (PAA) which serves as a precursor for the synthesis of Penicillin G. PAA supplies the side-chain of penicillin G, (benzyl penicillin).
