Resting with mom while they get their balance. I love how a mother goat cares for and licks a new baby even when she is working on delivering another.
We give our mamas hot water and molasses after kidding for a bit of a boost. After the hard work they are very thirsty.
We like to see kids up on four feet within 10 minutes. If their back legs seem weak, we give them a little shot of BoSe. These kids had no problem. We have found giving the mamas an injection of BoSe 2 weeks before kidding is super helpful and results in healthy strong kids.
Sometimes while the mama is still having contractions and eliminating her placenta, she does not stand still for the kids to nurse. Clementine was super sweet about giving each of them a chance to get as much as they needed. We usually help the little ones get a bit of colostrum right off as it makes them stronger in those first hours and is essential for health as they grow. Both these kids did a great job getting milk. It always is such a relief once every kid has found the teat!
If they get too cold they can’t suck well, so we also help to dry them off and give them a little massage to warm them up! This also helps them realize right off that humans are part of their family.
Still working on their balance and a little milk drunk but looking good. We watch the mamas and kids closely in the days after kidding to make sure everyone is healthy. It helps when they are in a kidding stall and the barn cams help us observe them even when we are inside. Sometimes the kids prefer to nurse only from one side, in that case we milk out the side they are ignoring and often that makes it more interesting to the kids. In some cases, like with Cinnamon this season, the kids are determined to only drink one side so we keep milking the other to keep her from getting uncomfortable. We also watch the mamas to make sure they are eating hay and grain. This is especially important when you have to go in to pull stuck kids. For example, we were a little worried about Abby after kidding because we had to untangle her three kids to get them out, but Banamine and antibiotics worked their magic and have her eating and happy again. Clementine had a super easy delivery which is great since she is an older doe.
