Majestic and agile, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep is a prominent figure in Colorado's steep and jagged canyons.
Rams, or male sheep, are famous for their massive horns. They may boast a 360-degree curl when their horns are fully developed.
Ewes, or female sheep, have slender horns that are much shorter and straighter.
During the rut, rams battle for dominance and breeding rights. Equal-sized rams may joust and fight over an estrus ewe.
Rams will pursue ewes over rocky and rugged terrain until successful breeding occurs.
Colorado declared the bighorn sheep the state animal in 1961.
Despite their abundance today, bighorn sheep were nearly extinct at the turn of the century.
CPW, along with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society and other conservation groups, has spent decades rebuilding sheep populations through aggressive trapping and relocation efforts.
CPW has completed more than 100 transplants of bighorn sheep throughout Colorado since restoration efforts began in the 1940s.
