UNESCO recognizes the Canary Islands as being one of the planet's "Windows to the Skies".
Gran Canaria boasts some unique environmental traits.
46% of its territory has already been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve.
This means that over 100,000 hectares are now protected, 65,000 of which are on land and the other 35,000 are in the sea.
It has a truly special orography, which allows for star-gazing from up on high, with skies that are free from contamination and are clear nearly all year round.
The ancient Canarians looked for answers to their religious concerns, at places full of mysticism and linked to the stars.
The best examples of these are the Necropolis of Artenara, the Roque Bentayga and Cuatro Puertas.
This recognition also highlights an age-old island culture, which has been observing stars and has been guided by them for many centuries.
