Switch to the server running Hyper-V.
Open Server Manager.
Go to Tools and Server Manager to open Hyper-V Manager.
Since the Hyper-V role is installed on this server, it automatically appears in the manager.
The top center section shows the virtual machines installed on this host .
The middle section shows the checkpoints.
A checkpoint is a moment in time of the virtual machine saving hard drive and memory so that it can be restored to that point in time by an administrator.
Additional details about the currently selected virtual machine appear in the bottom section.
On the right are settings for configuring the Hyper-V server and the selected virtual machine.
RSAT is already installed on the Windows 8.1 machine but does not include Hyper-V management tools. This can be seen when Server manager is opened and there is no Hyper-V Management link.
Right click on Start Menu and select Control Panel. Select Programs and then select “Turn Windows features on and off”.
In the Features list, expand the Hyper-V item and check Hyper-V Management Tools. Press o.k. and return to the desktop.
Open Server Manager and run Hyper-V Manager from the tools menu.
You can also get to Hyper-V Manager by right clicking on the Start menu and clicking on Search and search “hyper”.
Right click on Hyper-V Manager and click Connect to Server
Enter in the server name and click Ok. It should connect relatively quickly but sometimes may take a little while to connect.
If the server and the client are not in the same domain, for example an untrusted domain or a workgroup, extra configuration needs to be done. Microsoft has provided a script which makes this configuration easy. The script can be downloaded from
