In the fall of 1945 Swedish Saab started developing a project called R 101
When the P-80 was revealed to the public, Saab decided to scrap the R 101 and focus on a more advanced project.
After analysing the German data it was decided that the Saab R 1001 was to have swept-back wings.
J 29A, the first serial-produced version, was delivered from 1951 to 1954. A total of 224 aircraft were made.
The J 29B added extra fuel tanks in the wings, as well as improved armament including rockets and napalm bombs.
A single prototype J 29D was made to test the Ghost RM 2A turbojet with an afterburner.
Eventually the J 29F was modified to carry Sidewinder IR- missiles.
The Saab 29s mainly flew ground attack and reconnaissance missions, and performed very well.
Focus was on surviving a potential third world war. In peacetime NATO pilots had restrictions on their training
During the 1950s the Swedish Air Force was considered the fourth strongest in the world.
