Forests are ecosystems that are full of trees.
The animals in a forest depend on trees for food and shelter.
Grasslands are ecosystems that are dominated by grasses.
The fastest animals in the world are found in grasslands.
Deserts are ecosystems that receive very little rainfall.
Desert plants often have small, narrow leaves to reduce the amount of water that evaporates from their leaves.
Aquatic ecosystems are found in bodies of water.
Aquatic plants and algae have adaptations that allow them to float.
It's called ecosystem restoration
All living things need carbon
Trees store carbon. So does soil. And seagrass in the ocean.
But, as ecosystems become weak, they release carbon instead of storing it.
Look at the soil below your feet. Healthy soils grow 95% of our food.
When we lose forests, wildlife is forced to come closer to humans, bringing what's called Zoonotic disease
Growing trees in cities would help to cut pollution dramatically they would filter and cool the air, improving our health and reducing global warming
Levels of Organization within Ecosystems
Each individual living thing is called an organism.
When we talk about the population of a city, we are referring to all of the members of the human species that live in that area!
The different populations of living things interacting in an area are called a community.
An ecosystem contains all of the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors in an area.
We can also describe an ecosystem as being the community of living things together with the environmental factors that they interact with.
Ecosystems do not have to be large. Any area that contains living and non-living factors can be defined as an ecosystem!
ECOSYSTEMS
Living things depend on each other for survival
The living components of an ecosystem are called biotic factors
The nonliving components of an ecosystem are called abiotic factors
The growth and survival of organisms is limited by the resources and conditions of the environment
When environmental conditions are favorable and resources are abundant, an ecosystem can support many organisms
When environmental conditions are unfavorable and resources are scarce, less organisms can be supported by the ecosystem
An ecosystem is a place where living things interact with each other, and their environment.
