In English named for the red berries of the Hawthorn
Its powerful bill can crack the toughest seeds - the jaw muscles exert a crushing force of almost 50 kg (110 lbs) - which can crack a cherry or damson stone
However they also forage on the ground particularly in winter
Cautiously dropping from branch to branch until they reach the forest floor
Only when the bolder Chaffinches and Greenfinches have shown it is safe do they appear
The only time to observe them closely is from cover when they are eating or drinking
