Ann Savage was born Bernice Maxine Lyon on February 19, 1921, in Columbia, South Carolina.
After her father died, Savage and her mother moved to Los Angeles. Her mother worked in a jewelry store and Savage spent much of her time in LA's downtown movie palaces.
At 17, Savage was given a screen test at MGM; when that didn't pan out, she studied at Max Reinhardt's theatre workshop, where she adopted her screen name.
Savage was a popular pin-up model during World War II and she twice took part in tours to promote the sales of war bonds.
By 1945, Savage was working primarily for Poverty Row producers such as Bill Pine and Bill Thomas (dubbed by some in the industry as "the Two Dollar Bills") and Sigmund Neufeld.
It was Edgar G. Ulmer's DETOUR (1945) that cemented Savage's legacy. Made on a minuscule budget, DETOUR is today considered a film noir classic and Savage's performance as predatory femme fatale Vera is legendary.
