Biochemical or Biological Oxygen Demand
Definition of Biochemical or Biological Oxygen Demand
Why the Standard BOD test is run in the dark at 20oC for 5 days?
What is Microorganism?
Explanation of BOD
Idealized BOD curves.
Why Nitrogenous Oxygen Demand generally begins after about 8-10 days?
Explanation of Formula D1-D5/P
What is dilution factor?
Derivation of Formula BOD₅ = (D1 – D5) - f (B1 – B5)/ P
What is Seed and Why seeded is essential?
Derivation of Formula, BODt = L0 (1- e-k1t) (ln based)
Explanation of Formula, BODt = L0 (1- 10-Rt) (log based)
BOD rate (K1) depends on
Typical value of BOD5
Sources of increasing BOD Level
Significances of BOD test
Limitations of BOD Test
Sample pH must be between 6 and 8. If it isn't, it must be adjusted to be within a pH of 7.0 to 7.2.
Blanks are used to ensure that there is no cross-contamination during the analytical procedure.
6 mL of standard is added to each of the Standard bottles.
Fill All 3 Standard Bottles.
Samples must be 20 ± 3 degrees C.
Add 6 mL of seed to each bottle.
The two bottles that are not full are topped off with buffer solution.
After the bottles are ready, we use the calibrated DO meter to measure the initial DO concentration in all bottles.
Read and record the initial DO concentration of all bottles.
Read and record the 5-day DO concentration of all bottles.
