Delta Air Lines has officially retired the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 after 25 years of service with the airline.
The final Delta MD-90 revenue service was flight DL90 operated by 21.8 year-old N925DN from Houston to Atlanta on June 2, 2020.
This final MD-90, N925DN, was originally operated by China Eastern Airlines until Delta acquired the aircraft in July 2010.
After arriving in Atlanta, this final MD-90 will fly to Blytheville, Arkansas, for retirement.
Not only is this Delta's final MD-90, this is also the world's final MD-90 as Delta was the remaining operator of the aircraft.
The MD-90s alongside the MD-88s acted as the workhorse for Delta's fleet, flying 900 out of 3,000 flights per day and accounted for 50% of flights from Atlanta in 2014.
Delta was the launch customer for the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 in 1995. At its peak, Delta operated 65 of these aircraft.
The MD-90 acted as a successor to the MD-88 with improved cost performance while decreasing environmental impact through reduced emissions.
Originally, Delta cancelled some MD-90 orders when Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas in 1997, and went with the 737-800.
However, Delta received second-hand MD-90s between 2009 and 2013 which allowed Delta to rebound after bankruptcy.
