Why Eric started growing Grewia. A few nice characteristics are back-budding, leaf reduction, and the location and size of the flowers.
The flowering period is almost constant, from early Spring to late Fall. (transcriber's note: and they are so darn pretty!!)
Can be grown indoors and outdoors!
One challenge - Grewia doesn't grow a lot of wood really quickly, making them difficult for large bonsai. They're well suited for mame and shohin though!
Repotting can be done off-season, or outside traditional boundaries, as Eric demonstrated by repotting from a gallon container down into a small shohin-size bonsai pot.
